My counselling career began 25 years ago and since then, I have worked in a variety of settings with many different populations. Though I have been fortunate to work with people from all walks of life, my work seems to draw me to those who face discrimination: women, youth at risk, people with special needs, children who have been orphaned, teen parents, new immigrants, indigenous people, people with HIV/AIDS, people struggling with mental illness, people who inject drugs, the homeless, those who have been incarcerated, GLBTQ, and other cultural minorities.
While Youth and Family Therapy has historically been my area of focus, I’ve also worked extensively with children, adults and couples addressing a variety of personal issues, such as loneliness/isolation, disordered eating addictions/substance use, grief and loss, death and dying, chronic pain, communication, anger, assertiveness, self-esteem, family conflict and relationship issues, parenting concerns and attachment issues, career and identity, life transitions, stress, anxiety and depression. I possess a B.A. in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria and a M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I am a registered therapist through Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP), a member of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focussed Therapy (ICEEFT) and a member of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors #3126.
“We are actively mastering what we once passively suffered” ~Mark Savickas
My work is grounded in attachment theory and I use a number of evidence-based approaches. I believe that change occurs when one begins to develop acceptance and compassion for oneself. I believe that emotions are an important source of information that can teach us much about who we are and what we value. I explore past relationships to encourage people to uncover unhelpful beliefs they have formed about themselves and the world, which allows people to unlock themselves from patterns or coping strategies that no longer serve them. I take a person-centred and psychodynamic approach, drawing heavily on emotion-focused and compassion-focussed psychotherapies as well as mindfulness-based, polyvagal and internal family systems theories.
All people deserve a safe place to be heard, cared for, and to explore what is in their heart, mind, body and spirit without the fear of being judged in their process. It is my job to provide you with an experience of being accepted and cherished so that you may heal, grow and create meaningful and enduring change in your life.
